We have a good weather forecast for tomorrow, so come and enjoy a lovely day at the coast. See you there!
Well, we are just about set for the big day at the St Abbs Wool Festival tomorrow, Saturday 1st March. The van is packed with lots of lovely goodies - new handspun yarns, just knitted hats & bags & cowls etc. I've also been putting together some knitting and crochet kits so that you can take away all you need to make something lovely for yourself - or if you are feeling generous, for someone else! I've got kits to make: hand spun Teddy bears, stuffed with lambswool; hand spun cowls that take almost no time to knit and will keep you warm and toasty for a long time; how about a nice crochet bowl to put those easter eggs in? Or practice your fair isle knitting by making some lovely woolly Shetland balls! How about a beanie hat knitting kit? Some crocheted sea creatures made from Shetland yarns - jelly fish, anemones, limpets and star fish just for starters? Kits start at just £10.
We have a good weather forecast for tomorrow, so come and enjoy a lovely day at the coast. See you there! I thought I would share some images of things people have made with my hand spun yarns. If you have bought some yarn from me, please send me a picture and I'll be happy to post it here. This lovely purse was made by Elsa who is 7 years old, she knitted it with my lovely hand spun hand dyed Swaledale yarn and finished it off with a beautiful coconut shell printed button. I think this young lady will go a long way in wool world! Next up is a teddy bear made from my hand spun, soft and silky Gotland yarn from Marion in Cumbria. She had one of my teddy bear kits for Christmas. A really great bit of knitting! Now I know I'm a bit slow putting this one up, but couldn't resist. These are new born baby socks made in the softest, finest, hand spun Mongolian Cashmere - a babe made for luxury if ever there was one! Thanks Geraldine in the Scottish Borders for sharing this one. Well, after a month at home busy crafting and getting stock levels up for the new year a little note of what I've been up to! Weaving - a nice sampler (see previous post for photos) Spinning - more than 6 kilometres of yarn to sell - yes, I know I just added it up this afternoon and can't quite believe I've done so much - lots of different breeds of sheep and all on my stall ready for you to knit up! Knitting - a lovely handspun Bowmont cable and rib cowl that fits perfectly and feels soft as soft can be (pattern to follow soon), a lovely merino and silk handspun scarf for a friend, a little moebius knitting too - a cowl in handspun bfl 3 ply, a new design for a jumper in traditional fairisle motifs - photos soon Crocheting - more bowls as I've sold all I had in stock, and a new jumper design (again pattern to follow soon). Then there is the St Abbs project I've been working on - a few taster photos below to whet your appetite - go check out the facebook page for more information! Some dates for your diariesTomorrow - Saturday 15th February at the Buttermarket in Berwick upon Tweed between 9am and 4pm
Next Saturday 22nd February at Kelso Farmers' market in the Town Square between 9am and 1.30pm Wednesday 26th February at Duns Volunteer Hall for the regular monthly craft and food market between 10am and 4pm Saturday 1st March - the St Abbs Wool Festival at St Abbs I'll be at the Buttermarket in Berwick upon Tweed at least two Saturdays a month, hopefully getting to Kelso most months, then out and about a bit further afield at woolly events - the biggest of which confirmed so far are Woolfest in Cumbria the last weekend in June and Yarndale in Skipton the last weekend in September. I had a great time this week on my weaving course with Janis at Flight Weaving. Spent the first day learning about warps and wefts, bits of the loom and how to cut and thread the loom with the warp. Then got to do a bit of weaving at the end of day one. Day two was totally occupied with weaving and wow do you have to concentrate! I made a sampler to Janis's recipe with lots of different twill and herringbone patterns. Here's a shot of it in progress on the loom and below are some shots of the piece after completion, ready for finishing. I've got to do the tassles at the ends, sew in all the loose ends and then give it a good wash, so I'll post another photograph of it all clean and tidy! I've bought the loom and will spend more time improving my techniques. Janis teaches in her studio, so use the link above to get in touch with her - highly recommended! Just to let you all know that the date for the next St Abbs Wool Festival has been arranged - it's Saturday 1st March - click the link here to find out more!
On a personal note, I've been busy working on some new Shetland / Fair Isle designs over the festive period and I'll post some photos when they've been washed and blocked. I'm looking forward to a weaving course next week with Janis at Flight Weaving so I'll be putting a photo or two up to show you what we get up to! ...I've unpacked my mobile shop for the last time this year and have lit the fire and put my feet up ready for a rest - and look forward to a couple of weeks off.
A sad end to the season with torrential rain and gale force winds in Kelso on Saturday meant that we didn't get such a good Christmas market as last year, but well done to everyone who turned out - stallholders and customers alike! I've now got to settle down with the diary for 2014 and all the application forms for events, fairs and festivals to plan where we will go next year. To finish off the year, I've put a special 50% discount on all my patterns, so go through to my pattern pages here, decide what to buy and all discounts are applied before checkout. Thank you to everyone who has been following skybluepink designs over 2013, please keep coming back to check for new things - I won't really be doing nothing for a fortnight, my mind is already working on new projects! As if I haven't enough to do at the moment, inspiration arrives at the strangest times! I was at St Abbs last weekend for our regular Friday market and saw folks tapping away on their smart phones and i-pads, all being tucked away in dull brown and black leather cases, so I thought, they need a little colour in their lives! Ask any knitter and the solution is obvious, the natural thing to do was to make a smart phone sock and here it is in all it's pure Shetland wool loveliness. I'm busy writing up the patterns and knitting some more designs/colourways and will be publishing them later this week... kits with yarn and patterns also coming - ever so cheap to send out in the post and enough time to knit one between now and Christmas. Please order via the contact form - but can you wait until the end of the week? Thank you!! :) I call this one the St Abbs phone sock as that's where I made it and the colours are just the same as the sea and the sky. This was the scene at St Abbs last week - a beautiful sunny day in November - and it was the same today but a little colder! One of the bears taking a little rest on the wall before setting out on a walk around the Head at St Abbs. Here are some date for the diary in December - where I'll be out and about and hopefully seeing you all. To finish off November, I'll be at the Buttermarket in Berwick upon Tweed between 9am and 4pm tomorrow, Saturday 30th November. It'll be cold but bright so dress up warm and come and see the lovely Georgian town of Berwick. We start off December with a date on Sunday the 1st at the Ford Christmas Fair at the Lady Waterford Hall in Ford Village between 11am and 3pm - a day not to be missed - click on the coloured text above and below for more information about the events listed. On Friday 6th our regular slot at the St Abbs market in the Ebba Centre at St Abbs between 10am and 3pm. The cafe is always open and the cheese scones are to die for! Saturday 7th is the usual Berwick street market and you can find us at the Buttermarket in Berwick between 9am and 4pm, alongside Slightly Foxed second hand book store, Masarnen with her lovely herbal potions, lotions and teas, Hedgepig copper jewellery and maybe some other hardy folk! It's cold out but there are plenty tea and coffee shops around and about so come and have a look around Berwick! Sunday 8th December sees us back once more in the Buttermarket for the Berwick upon Tweed Christmas Market, organised by the MAD events. We'll be there between 11am and 4pm so come along and join in the fun. Friday 13th sees us back in St Abbs for our regular producers market, so if you are still looking for those last minute seasonal gifts, perhaps we'll have that perfect something for you. Saturday 14th back in Berwick Buttermarket for the regular Saturday street market between 9am and 4pm. Friday 20th is our last St Abbs market this year - and indeed until March 2014, so this really is your last chance to stock up on lovely handmade things to eat - from fish, charcuterie, chocolates and cakes, gifts from jewellery, carved wood goods, paintings and drawings, quilting, knitting and crochet supplies and knitted accessories (from me!), candles, books and more besides. Saturday 21st December is the last Kelso farmers market of the year and with loads of stalls selling all the Christmas goodies a person could want, plus carol singers, mince pies and mulled wine this event should be something worth turning out for. The market starts at around 9am and finishes about 1.30ish, so get up early and come and see what's happening. After all this, I'm putting my feet up for a week or so, then we'll see what next year brings - already lined up are a second wool festival in St Abbs on the 1st March - more of which later; a woolly event in Wooler in the summer; maybe Woolfest in Cumbria if I'm lucky enough to be accepted; the Yarndale event in Skipton if that takes place too, back to Kendal for a second wool gathering would be fantastic and lots of Fridays in St Abbs with the regular market producers - lots to look forward too! Here's how these balls happened... I recently started stocking some lovely Shetland dk yarns in beautiful jewel colours. Then I wanted to make things to show them off to their best advantage. I came up with these lovely festive decorations. If you want some small easy projects to make for Christmas then these are perfect, taking less than an hour to make each ball, great for taking a little time out from the hurly burly of this time of year. I'm selling the pattern through my Ravelry pages (click on the coloured text to go through to the pattern page), there are several ball patterns, from which you can make around 37 different balls - more if you use more than 2 or 3 coloured yarns. I'm selling kits whilst I'm out and about at markets and fairs this month and next - a kit contains the pattern for all the balls, enough Shetland yarn to make around a dozen balls and wool nepps to stuff them with. There are 15 different coloured yarns to choose from too and the kit costs just £10. I think that it would be possible to send the kits out by post, so if you are interested, please use the contact form here. What a weekend! Started off at Halloween at Etal Village Hall with assorted spooks and ghouls, moved on to the local producers market at sunny St Abbs by the sea on Friday, then on Saturday we had our lovely woolly wool festival in St Abbs and that was a great success, finally on Sunday we went up to Haddington in East Lothian for the Poldrate Mill Fayre where I met up with lots of old friends and acquaintances from the Haddington spinners group. Now I'm officially worn out. BUT, we have November to get through now, so here's a list of where I'll be and links to the events so that you can read a little more about them, just click on the coloured text to find out more. JennieI've been knitting and designing for a long time and don't think I'm going to stop anytime soon. The inspiration just keeps coming, there is always a new technique to learn, a new yarn to try out and so many knitters out there in the world sharing their tips and secrets that it's sometimes hard to know what to do next.
