Jennie Howes' hand spun yarns
Well, it's taken a while, but at last here are my hand spun yarns for sale. All the white, brown, black and grey yarns are the natural colours of the individual sheep breeds, a huge variety of colours and textures from which to choose. I hope that you get as much enjoyment out of working with them as I did from spinning each one of them.

Hand spun & hand dyed yarns
A little explanation about my hand spun, hand dyed yarns. I wanted to do something a bit different, use yarns not normally used for dyeing, like Herdwick, Swaledale, Icelandic, Finnish, Corriedale, Shetland, Jacobs and Blue-faced Leicester. The difference is also that the wool isn't just white wool, but lovely blends of white, black, brown and grey yarns so that the colours have subtle tones and shades not normally found in white yarns. I hope you like them!
The Herdwick and Swaledale are 2 ply yarns are I suppose somewhere between dk and aran in size, between 25 and 35 metres of yarn per 25 gram ball.
All the other yarns are one ply (or singles) and quite fine, equivalent to lace or 1 ply yarns. There is between 70 and 140 metres of yarn per 25 gram ball, depending on breed.
I've written in the captions on the photos the fleece type and original colour (for example, light grey Herdwick, dark grey Herdwick, black, brown & white Jacobs etc.,) and the minimum yarn lengths per ball.

White and cream yarns
From the softest white mongolian cashmere goat to the very modern texel sheep there is something here to suit every project. Some are pure white others are creamy coloured - like the Teeswater and Devon longwool breeds. A choice to suit every budget, prices range between £7 and £42 plus postage. Brown and black yarns
A little bit global this section with yarns from all over the sheep world, soft Shetlands and Blue faced Leicesters, smooth lustrous Gotland, Icelandic, Finnish and Norwegian breeds, Welsh and Manx Loughtan, and finally Corriedale from Australia.
Grey yarns
There is grey - and there is yet another grey! Each yarn has it's own qualities, some coarse and hairy like the hardy Herdwick yarns - for making bags, baskets, and carpets, through to lustrous Gotland wools, soft Icelandic and Finnish wools, fine Massam long wools and the lovely Shetland and Jacob breeds loved by spinners and knitters everywhere.

Stripes and humbugs
Lovely yarns to spin and knit or crochet, these are all natural fleece colours. The barber poles are two or three different coloured fibres which are spun separately and then plied together to give the regular stripes, whilst the humbugs are the different coloured fibres spun randomly together and then either plied together or left as a 1 ply yarn. The effects created in a knitted or crocheted piece are truly individual.
Hand dyed yarns
I've just started experimenting with dyeing and here are some of the first results. I was aiming for colours which are like the oat and barley fields, just before the grains start to ripen, I think the Lincoln and Massam yarns really get the intensity of those colours, the Swaledales are a lot more muted, but lovely nonetheless. The dyes are acid dyes - I haven't experimented with natural dyes yet, but I don't think the time is so far away....

Wool and silk blend yarns
These yarns are a little bit luxurious in their feel. There are Merino & silk blends, Shetland & silk, and others to choose from. Some are 2 ply and others finer unplied yarns.
